Breathing

When beginning to learn to breath using your diaphragm, it is a good idea to lay down on your back with a pillow under your knees, this helps to encourage your body in to a state of relaxation. Think about where you are holding tension in your body. Let it go.

When practicing this breathing, it is important to breath in through your nose. You want to pretend that the opening of your nose is in the back of your throat, not in your nostrils. Be patient with yourself, this kind of breathing takes some practice.

Without straining your breath you will want to direct your breathing to your belly. Your belly should blow up like a balloon.

Let your breath go out of your body with a whoosh. It will do you good to hear the sound of your breath leaving your body.

Repeat 5 times, 2 times a day, in the morning, and while laying in bed before going to sleep.

This is a good exercise for when you find that you are feeling stress throughout the day as well.

There will come a time when this becomes natural, and trying to breath like this is less like trying, and more like something that you just do. You do not have to be laying down to do this breathing, and as it becomes more comfortable it will be easier to belly breath in more positions.

At this point, learning to take the breath a step further, and after bringing the air into your belly, you can bring more air in to your lungs, then let the air out of your belly, and then out of your lungs.

Paying attention to and focusing your breath is one of the first steps that you can take to appreciate the marvelous creation that is you. It will help you to recognize what you do in times of stress. Do you hold stress in your neck, your shoulders, your arms, your belly, your feet? It is through this recognition that you will have the opportunity to release the stress before it begins to cause physical problems.

I look forward to working with you to give you more tips on how to do every day things that will increase your body's ability to function most effectively.
