Pregnancy and Massage

A woman’s body will go through a lot of changes throughout pregnancy, massage can be very helpful for many of the discomforts of pregnancy. Among them:

  •  Swelling
  •  Breast tenderness
  •  Constipation
  •  Stress
  •  A feeling of not being connected to you body throughout your pregnancy

Positioning during Massage Sessions.

During the massage, the position that you would be laying in would be side lying, with a towel under your waist, a ‘huggable’ pillow, and a pillow between your knees. This is to help keep your posture as appropriate as possible throughout your massage.

Post partum Massage

Right after the baby is born a massage every 4 hours to your belly will help to move your uterus back in to place in your abdomen. The relaxation effects will also help to increase your production of milk. Breast massage is beneficial for helping the breasts to feel less heavy. If you have had a caesarean, postpartum massage can help to decrease the problems caused by the scar tissue. This massage can be done in the hospital, if permission is given by the hospital, or it can be done after you and your baby arrive home.

Tips for preventing discomfort on your journey to Motherhood.

Here are some ideas for things that you can do to help prevent discomfort along your journey to motherhood:

  •  Learn to do some diaphragmatic breathing, this will help to decrease your stress, and you will be giving your baby a massage at the same time!Ô
  • Wear appropriate footwear, and put your feet up when you are sitting to prevent swelling in your ankles. Ó
  • Go for a daily walk to keep yourself strong! Ô
